BayWa r.e. announced the appointment of Renuka Sharma as Managing Director of BayWa r.e. Thailand.

With over 16 years of professional experience in the construction and renewable energy business, Sharma will be responsible for BayWa r.e. Thailand’s continued efforts in accelerating renewable energy transition within Thailand.

Sharma is a mother of four and will be the first female Managing Director for BayWa r.e. in Southeast Asia. In addition to overseeing the running of the company and driving growth, Sharma is also a strong advocate for diversity in the workplace.

Sharma joined BayWa r.e. Thailand in 2020, helming the role of Head of Legal APAC before stepping up as Managing Director.

Daniel Gaefke, APAC Director at BayWa r.e. commented: “With Sharma’s vast and extensive experience in large complex projects, we are confident in her ability to deliver and spearhead BayWa r.e.’s energy transition goals. Her insights into specific renewable energy needs and challenges in the region are valuable to both our local office and our company as a whole. We are excited to have Sharma onboard as we continue to expand.”

Prior to joining BayWa r.e., Sharma held legal roles with SunEdison, TerraForm Global, and Brookfield Renewables, where she worked on renewable projects across Asia Pacific and South Africa.

Commenting on her appointment, Sharma said: “BayWa r.e. has an incredibly talented team and is well positioned to make a big impact within APAC. I am excited about this opportunity to take the company to the next level, together with our strong and dedicated teams.”

“On a personal note, I hope my appointment serves as example that things are starting to change and broadens the energy industry’s approach to female leadership,” Sharma continued.

A degree holder in Law and Russian, and LLM in Banking and Finance Law from Kings College, London, her immediate plans are to help drive the strategy, operations and sustainability efforts and to further BayWa r.e.'s community support beyond the renewable energy space, especially in promoting better workplace and DE&I.

BayWa r.e. currently has 90 employees from 19 nationalities with 50-50 male to female ratio in Thailand. The company is also exploring projects with not-for-profit organisations, to onboard more individuals from various walks of life and encourage more inclusivity and provide meaningful employment opportunities.
